We spotted something really interesting…
In early July Threads became the talk of the town. As Twitter (now X) continued to make headlines for all the wrong reasons, Zuckerberg came along with his own Twitter clone. It was all very exciting at the start and things looked promising with a high sign-up rate.
The app received over 100 million sign-ups in less than a week, likely thanks to the option to sign-up using your Instagram account. But sadly for Meta this early success didn’t last as user engagement dropped after a few weeks.
Since then the only significant update has been the launch of the web app, which was a requested feature at the start but not something likely to pull in any extra users.
So what can Meta do to get more users on Threads? We think we might know how.
This week as we were scrolling through Instagram we spotted this:
It was a selection of posts from Threads, relevant to the posts we’d been looking at. These posts were scrollable and tapping on one would open it in the Threads app.
We haven’t seen anyone else talking about this yet so it’s possible that this is a feature that Meta is still testing. But it’s interesting to see and likely means that Meta is experimenting with different ways to promote Threads.
Whether these efforts will translate to more active users is still to be seen, so we’ll just have to keep an eye on it. And if Threads finally becomes the Twitter replacement it wants to be, we’ll have to start paying it more attention!
